Top marks for Shannon who ‘loved’ her accounting apprenticeship

Shannon Love scored top marks on the island of Ireland in national accounting exams and has hailed the Accounting Technicians Ireland Higher-Level Apprenticeship as an 'incredible’ way to launch a career in the sector.

“While researching what I wanted to do after my A-Levels, I became very interested in the Accounting Technicians Ireland Higher-Level Apprenticeship, as opposed to the traditional university route into the sector. I felt through the apprenticeship, I would be able to make a head start on my career, gain experience and develop professionally while studying towards a professional, degree equivalent qualification.”

“I would work four days a week, and attend college on the other day. At times it was challenging to balance study and work, but it is worth it. I liked being able to apply my studies to my work, and vice-versa.”

Now based in Birmingham with ‘Big Four’ accounting firm Deloitte, after completing her two-year apprenticeship with Abac Chartered Accountants, Omagh, Shannon is planning on studying to become a fully-qualified chartered accountant, using exemptions gained through her ATI Diploma.

The funded, work-based learning programme sees locally placed apprentices earn at least the national minimum wage and above.

“Becoming an accounting technician through the Apprenticeship is an incredible way to launch a career in accounting. Additionally, it is an excellent foundation if you wish to progress to become a fully qualified accountant with a significant number of exemptions which can fast track your qualification. I am further ahead on my career path than I would have been had I attended university. The qualification is recognised and valued across a range of industries, you earn a salary while studying and can remain debt free.”

Applications are now open for the Accounting Technicians Ireland (ATI) Higher-Level Apprenticeship which starts in September, and is delivered through regional colleges across Northern Ireland. Shannon completed the Apprenticeship through South West College, Omagh. School leavers, A-level students, career-changers and mature learners can apply.
